The San Diego chapter of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), the nation’s first and only organization for Asian Pacific American union members and allies, along with the United Domestic Workers of America (UDW), Filipino Migrant Center, the DC chapters of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) and 1Love Movement host “Immigration Reform and You: AAPI Immigrant Rights Community Forum”.
Highlighting testimonies from community members, the forum will focus on how immigration reform impacts the Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), the fastest growing population in the U.S. Speakers will share and address roadmap to citizenship, worker’s rights, deportation and immigrant women and children. Elected officials including Mayor Jerry Sanders are invited to hear directly from and respond to constituents.

WHY: AAPIs are stakeholders in immigration reform. Currently, of the 11 million aspiring citizens, over one million are AAPIs living in the shadows. Thousands of Southeast Asian refugees have been negatively impacted by unfair deportations after the enactment of 1996 reform laws. Family unity is among the top priorities for AAPIs – 2 million are waiting on family backlogs and as long as 20 years.
