Washington, DC - The following is a statement from Johanna Puno Hester, the National President of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO (APALA), on last night's vice presidential debate:
"We applaud that Senator Kaine called out Pence's deflections to explain and defend Trump's racist, sexist, Islamophobic comments and erratic temperament. What echoes true from the debate is that Pence is asking the American people to vote for someone he can't even defend."
"We will not stand behind candidates and campaigns that scapegoat immigrants, ignore the racism and bias in our criminal justice system, punish women for making choices about their body, and puts more wealth in the hands of the 1% and not working people."
"What we will do is stand on the right side of history and support candidates who advocate for our communities and all working people and families. This November's election will undoubtedly shape the kind of country we live in, and it is critical that we activate our communities to register, vote and encourage their friends and family who are eligible to do the same."
