Washington, D.C. - APALA comments on the failed coup attempt by Trump and his supporters, demands his removal and the resignation of every elected official who spread lies about the 2020 election and enabled the seditious attack that we witnessed in the U.S. Capitol yesterday:
APALA National President and NEA appointee to the APALA National Executive Board, Monica Thammarath said, “On the heels of a tremendous victory by people of color and the new American electorate in Georgia, we saw violence and destruction from rightwing, white supremacist fascists who want to destroy the democratic process in a last-ditch attempt to preserve their power. They must be held accountable. AAPI workers organized and elected Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States; we will continue to take bold action to ensure our democracy represents the will of the people, not the rich and powerful.
“As we witnessed law enforcement fail to stop and even give willing assistance to armed white vigilantes, we recall the overbearing presence and response toward us from police at the Capitol, White House, and throughout the country during this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. Over and over again we’ve seen police target, detain, and even kill Black people and organizers protesting for equal justice. We must take this opportunity to eradicate white supremacy from the policing and justice systems in this country. APALA chapters and members are ready to use our collective power and work with community allies to mobilize around this effort.
“We are not surprised by this attack on our democracy and we refuse to be intimidated or deterred. Over the past four years, Trump and his enablers have steadily fueled disinformation, bigotry, and violence and they must be removed from office immediately. We will continue to love and fight for each other no matter what.”
