Washington, DC--Last week, President Obama announced more key administration posts to serve under his administration. The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO (APALA) lauds President Obama’s nomination of Portia Y. Wu as the Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Administration in the Department of Labor. "Wu would be a great addition to the Department of Labor. She brings with her over a decade of experience and, most recently, serves as the Special Assistant to the President for Labor and Workforce Policy at the White House Domestic Policy Council." said Johanna Puno Hester, APALA National President. "Her background with the National Partnership for Women and Families, along with her work with the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee reflect her strong commitment to working families across the country."
Through Wu’s work with the Senate HELP Committee, she organized around labor and pension issues while holding numerous positions at the Committee including: Labor and Pensions Counsel, Chief Labor and Pensions Counsel, and Labor Policy Director/General Counsel. Her efforts to ensure that legislation accounts for the well-being of working women included the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Healthy Families Act, which President Obama signed.
