Communications & Development Coordinator

Position Overview

APALA is seeking a skilled, creative and detailed-oriented Communications & Development Coordinator. This role will have high-level exposure to an exciting world of community advocacy, nonprofit coalitions and labor organizing and will have a chance to significantly affect APALA's overall direction, program and productivity.

The ideal candidate will have previous political or issue campaign experience and enjoy working with a small but nimble team. This individual should be comfortable with traditional and digital media, online technology, and have a long term vision for non-profit online and print communications and development strategies. This position requires the ability to manage a large workflow of requests efficiently and the diligence to check all work for accuracy and completeness.

The Communications and Development Coordinator will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the National Executive Board (NEB) and other APALA staff. This position is based in Washington, D.C.  Flexibility is necessary. Nights and weekends including travel may be required.

Primary Responsibilities

External Communications

  1. Enhance APALA’s communications program that includes the following components:
    • Update and maintain APALA website;
    • Increase email list and maintain membership database;
    • Produce press advisories & releases;
    • Draft talking points, opinion editorials and letters to the editor and;
    • Maintain APALA Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter and other social media accounts.
  2. Produce educational tool kits, fact sheets, sign-on letters and other relevant materials; and
  3. Publish monthly electronic newsletter, in conjunction with Membership and Chapter Coordinator.


Internal Communications

  1. Coordinate APALA calendars and intra-office communications including grant, report & other deadlines;
  2. Manage and maintain the integrity of donor database including, but not limited to, data entry, gifts processing, and donation acknowledgements and;
  3. Support Membership and Chapter Coordinator in national membership mobilization campaign and other communications with key stakeholders.


Fundraising & Fiscal Management

  1. In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including the following:
    • Engage NEB members to maintain current and target new affiliate unions for annual and program specific contributions;
    • Continue APALA Lifetime Warrior Program and implement broader indivdual donor program;
    • Expand program and general support from Foundations, Labor Friendly Corporations and other major donors.
    • Maintain APALA Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter and other social media accounts.



  1. Participate in the planning and coordination of APALA’s major events including but not limited to the Biennial Convention, Organizing Institute, National Executive Board Meetings and others;
  2. Provide technical assistance as necessary for chapter leaders and NEB members and;
  3. Other duties as outlined by the APALA Executive Director.


Desired Skills and Experience

  • A record of activism on behalf of workers, the community or other groups engaged in the pursuit of social, racial and economic justice;
  • Prior work experience with board of directors, success in fundraising, developing budgets, grant proposals and work plans;
  • BA or BS degree in political science, labor relations, or equivalent work or education-related experience;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people;
  • Excellent research, oral, writing and listening skills;
  • Strong database skills and experience with Excel and Access, along with a willingness to learn Catalyst and VAN;
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to learn;
  • Knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and the labor movement;
  • Previous Hill, political or issue campaign experience preferred.
