APALA Proud to Announce Victor Uno’s Appointment as Commissioner to Port of Oakland

(Washington D.C.) Victor Uno, a founding member and former executive board member of the National Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), was recently nominated by the Mayor of Oakland, Ron Dellums, to serve as a Commissioner with the Port of Oakland.  The Oakland City Council unanimously approved Victor Uno’s selection.

“This is a proud day for APALA.  Victor Uno’s leadership and vision have contributed to the growth of APALA as well as the broader labor movement.  We are certain that the Port of Oakland stands in a better place today as a result of his appointment,” stated Maria Somma, President of APALA.

In 2002, Victor Uno was elected as the Business Manager for the International Brotherhood Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 595, the first mainland Japanese American to attain this position.  Prior to this position, Victor Uno served as the training director for the electrical apprenticeship program, as well as the President of Local 595.  He is currently a member of the Minority Electrical Workers Caucus and also holds the position of 2nd Vice President with the Alameda County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

In addition to his extensive labor background, Victor Uno has also been a selfless community leader. He serves as a board member for Asian Health Services, the APALA Alameda County Chapter, the Oakland APOLLO Alliance, and the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy.  “Victor Uno’s experiences as an innovative problem solver are tremendous assets and a benefit to all.  Furthermore, his presence ensures that labor and community have a voice with the Port of Oakland,” stated Gloria T. Caoile, Executive Director of APALA.

The Port Commission consists of seven members nominated by the Mayor and approved by the City Council for four-year terms.  Members of the Commission serve without salary or compensation.  The Commission oversees the 19 miles of waterfront on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, with about 900 acres devoted to maritime activities and another 2,600 acres devoted to aviation activities.

Founded in 1992, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members.
