Voter Protection
Instances of institutional and
individual discrimination targeting APAs, as
well as many other racial and ethnic
minorities, have been well documented. APAs
have reported inaccurate ballot translations in
Asian languages, rude and hostile treatment at
the polls, and poll workers requesting
identification unnecessarily. In
response to these injustices, APALA initiated a
voter protection component to the APALA – Every
Vote Counts program. Activities
include:
1. Created and sent direct
mail in language regarding issues of election
protection;
2. Recruited volunteers to
participate in AFL-CIO election protection
program; and
3. Recruited volunteers to
participate in the AALDEF exit poll
program.
