Guy Fujimura
Guy Fujimura became a member of the ILWU Local 142 in Hawaii in 1974 when he went to work for Love’s Bakery (then a subsidiary of Intercontinental Baking and later purchased in 1978 by Daiichiya, a Japanese company) as a janitor and later transferring to the shipping department. The company was organized by the then International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union in 1946. It remains the largest commercial bakery in Hawaii with baking facilities in Honolulu and a statewide distribution system. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 142 is the largest private sector local union in Hawaii with some 20,000 members working statewide in diverse industries and occupations on six islands. There are five industrial grouping -- Longshore, Sugar, Pineapple, Tourism and General Trades.
While at the Love’s Bakery Unit 4402 of the ILWU Local 142, Guy was elected a department shop steward. Later he became the head inside plant steward and then was elected Chair of the statewide Love’s Unit 4402. He also was selected as Chair of the statewide bakery negotiation committee while the Unit Chair. In 1978 Guy was asked to work for the Local 142 as an organizer and in the Union’s education department. He later became the Administrative Assistant to the Titled Officers. In 1985 he was appointed to the vacancy in the office of Secretary-Treasurer. Later that year in the November elections, he was elected as Secretary-Treasurer, an office he continues to hold to present. He is also the Local Political Action Coordinator. He is the current Chair of the ILWU Local 142’s Hotel Industry ILWU Pension Trust. He is the Co-Chair of the ILWU (Hawaii) Employers General Pension Trust and a trustee on the ILWU Local 142 Health and Welfare Trust and the ILWU Local 142 (General) Health and Welfare Trust. Fujimura was a member of APALA’s original Steering Committee and has been a member of the National Executive Board since APALA’s official formation in 1991. He served as National President from 1977 to 2001 and was honored with the Art Takei Award in 2002. He was a Vice President of the Hawaii State AFL-CIO until October 2008 and continues to serve on Hawaii State AFL-CIO statewide Labor Community Services Committee. He has served on the Hawaii Convention Center Authority and the State Commission on Water Resource Management. He is currently a board member of the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs (HIPA), the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii and PBS Hawaii (public television).
