Governor's APA Council

Governor Jennifer Granholm formed the Advisory Council on Asian and Pacific American Affairs to ensure Asian and Pacific Americans are equal participants in Michigan’s communities and economy on May 3, 2004.  The Council recently held a Summit on Asian and Pacific Islander American issues on Dec. 7, 2005.

APALA Board member Ying Gee was one of the 29 members appointed by the Governor to serve four-year terms after the initial appointments.  The Council will serve in an advisory capacity to the Governor and alerting her to pertinent issues within the Asian and Pacific American community.  It will also make recommendations about programs and policies for the betterment of Asian and Pacific Islanders in Michigan and will help promote public awareness of Asian and Pacific American culture and accomplishments.

2006 Affirmative Action Inititiative

The chapter is also working with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium (NAPALC) on educating union members and different ethnic community groups on affirmative action as part of an effort to defeat Ward Connerly plans to put his anti-affirmative action initiative to a vote in the November 2006 election in Michigan.
