APALA LA: Intern Spotlight! Reflections from UCLA Students on Wisconsin’s Protests

The people in Wisconsin as well as many around the United States were outraged about Governor Walker’s decision to take away bargaining rights from a majority of public employees. Protesters, which included students, teachers, firemen, and even people from other states, came together to try to stop Walker’s attack on unions. It is one thing for Governor Walker to try and cut costs by taking money from unions in order to close the state’s budget gap, but it is a travesty to take away the unions’ collective bargaining rights. In fact, in an interview with Obama from NBC news, Obama went on to say: “As a general proposition everyone has got to make some adjustments to new physical realities and if we want to avoid layoffs which I want to avoid…I think those kinds of adjustments are the right things to do. On the other hand some of what I heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you are just making it harder to public employees to collectively bargain generally seems like more of an assault on unions.” Read the rest of this entry »

Las Vegas Chapter Hosts Its First Local Worker’s Rights Hearing

Henderson, Nevada – The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), the Nevada State AFL-CIO and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) co-sponsored the first Las Vegas Area Asian Pacific American Workers’ Rights Hearing on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Seven Asian Pacific American workers, representing a broad range of industries and backgrounds testified to a panel comprised of labor and community leaders regarding the right to organize and strengthening labor and community partnerships. Prior to the worker testimony, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis addressed the 300 attendees demonstrating her commitment to advocate on behalf of Asian Pacific American workers, and all workers. APALA Releases Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence

Washington, D.C. – APALA, in partnership with the UCLA Labor Center, released a report that documents the challenges that Asian Pacific American workers face in exercising their right to organize, and work place abuses endured by low-wage immigrant workers.  The report, Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence, profiles Asian Pacific American workers who testified at the first national Asian Pacific American Workers’ Rights Hearing in November 2009 at the AFL-CIO national headquarters in Washington DC. APALA Convenes First New York Area Asian Pacific American Workers’ Rights Hearing

Washington D.C. – The APALA New York Chapter convened the first New York Area Asian Pacific American Workers’ Rights Hearing on Saturday, June 5, 2010.  As part of a national campaign, the New York area hearing convened policymakers, scholars, and workers to address working conditions and the right to organize for APA workers.  Additionally the hearing debuted APALA’s new report, Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence. APALA Mourns Loss of National President John Delloro

Washington, D.C. – The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), AFL-CIO mourns the unexpected loss of its National President, John Delloro, who passed away from a heart attack.  Elected in 2009 as one of the youngest leaders to this position, Delloro also served as Executive Director of the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute, where he was a member of the American Federation of Teachers.
